Grid and ornament are not opposites

The grid is not the enemy of ornament; it carries it. On Anatolian surfaces a motif is never placed at random: there is a measure, an interval of repetition, and an idea of a centre. The modernist notion of the grid asks the same question — what goes where, and at what measure. The difference between the two lies not in style but in intent. The grid establishes order; ornament makes that order legible. If ornament looks excessive on a surface, the problem is not the ornament but the measure.
