About

Mevlüt Bak

Mevlüt Bak is an independent designer and art director working on brand identity, packaging, art direction, and visual systems. The work focuses less on designing a single mark than on building systems that let a brand hold the same character across every point of contact. Logo, typography, colour, image, packaging, material, and production are not treated as separate parts but as continuations of one visual structure. The aim is not simply a result that looks good; it is an identity that keeps its quality across new products, new surfaces, and in the hands of different teams.

Services

Brand identity — Defining mark, typography, colour, proportion, grid, image language, and application principles within one structure.

Packaging — Label, box, bottle, product family, surface system, and print decisions handled in relation to volume, material, production, and use.

Art direction — Sustaining the same visual character across photography, image, object, and communication surfaces.

Visual systems — Repeatable rules that let the identity work at different scales, across teams and production conditions.

Editorial — Grid, typography, and information hierarchy systems for catalogues, books, menus, corporate publications, reports, and information-dense surfaces.

Digital application — Carrying an existing identity consistently into web and digital touchpoints. This is visual identity application and art direction, not software development.

Practice

The practice develops between contemporary design discipline and the architectural, craft, and visual culture of Anatolia. Rather than producing work that resembles the past, it focuses on reusing the knowledge of proportion, structure, material, and repetition established in the past within the needs of the present.

What remains at the end of a project?

The outcome of an identity project is not only logo files. The real aim is to establish a clear framework for the visual decisions an organisation will make later. When a new product arrives, a new package is needed, a new location opens, a new supplier is involved, or a new designer joins the system, the question “How should we look?” should not have to be asked again each time. A well-built identity describes what may change and what must be preserved. Design then turns from a one-off result into corporate visual memory. Appearance is the result. The system continues.

Projects are not selected by sector alone. Priority goes to work where design genuinely has a place in decision-making, and where identity, product, packaging, material, and communication can be considered together. The aim is not to produce as many projects as possible, but to develop systems that keep working long after they are built.

Working position

Being contemporary is no obstacle to belonging somewhere.

Being contemporary is no obstacle to belonging somewhere.

The openness of modernist design and the visual and structural knowledge of Anatolia are not treated as opposing fields. Kündekâri is as much construction as ornament. İznik is as much a surface order as a world of colour. A carpet is as much a question of grid as of motif. Architectural ornament works together with proportion and structure.

Working approach

No project begins with a ready-made aesthetic. The subject is examined first: history, category, production, material, use, and existing visual habits are assessed. What is necessary is then separated from what is merely customary. A distinguishing character is identified and turned into a system that can be repeated at different scales and on different surfaces. Production is treated as part of the design decision. For the full process, go to Method.

The value of this knowledge for design today does not lie in historical forms alone. The real value is found in proportion, module, repetition, material, surface, edge, and structure. A motif may be used. A tulip may be used. Geometry may be used. A tile reference may be used. Their presence is not the issue. The issue is that they must not replace thinking. The motif is not rejected. It is justified.
